History of the School

Don Bosco School, Sashipur

A Brief History of the School

Don Bosco, whose name today graces over 3,600 educational institutions worldwide—serving approximately 940,000 students and supported by 68,000 teachers and trainers—is followed by more than 13,575 Salesians across the globe. He was a true visionary—not only in the figurative sense, but quite literally. Throughout his life, he experienced vivid visions, which he humbly referred to as “dreams.” Don Bosco once said that he never took a step or initiated any project unless he believed it had been directed by heaven. He firmly believed that these divine directions were communicated to him through his dreams.

Thus one of his dreams was Don Bosco School, Sashipur—located at the gateway to Bhutan—had its humble beginnings in the nearby village of Horotola. An English Medium Primary School was first established there on 10 February 1992 by Fr. Augustine Edasserithottathil, who was then the Parish Priest of Kumarikatta (1990–1993). The school began in a small shed, aiming to meet the educational needs of the local community.

Recognizing both the region’s educational needs and its potential for evangelization, a larger plot of land was soon acquired at Sashipur to establish a more permanent institution. The foundation stone for the new Don Bosco School was laid on 1 November 1993.

In 1995, the school was relocated from Horotola to Sashipur, even though the new building was not yet completed. The newly constructed school was blessed by Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil on 6 January 1996.

Fr. Elias Kerketta, who served as Parish Priest from 1993 to 1998 and also acted as the Principal, visited the school daily and oversaw its development. Strategically located near the Bhutan border, the school gradually grew in size and reputation. Under the dedicated leadership of Fr. Ethelbert Minj (Parish Priest from 1998 to 2005) and the support of many others, Don Bosco School eventually secured affiliation with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE).

In 2002, a significant administrative shift took place when Fr. Joseph Puthenpurackal was appointed Principal of Don Bosco School, Sashipur. This marked the separation of the responsibilities of the School Principal from those of the Parish Priest. In February of the same year, Fr. Joseph began residing on the school premises at Sashipur, further strengthening his commitment to the institution’s growth.

Over the years, several dedicated Salesians have served the school in various capacities. In addition to the previously mentioned names, those who served as Principals include Fr. Nicodim Aind, Fr. Glorius Syiemlieh, Fr. M.C. George Mudakkampuram, Fr. Saju Kariyil, Fr. Pius Tharakunnel, and Fr. Benny Basil Plathottathil. Others who contributed significantly to the school’s mission include Fr. Paul Kuttikadan, Br Martin Basumatary, Br Augustine Fernandes, Fr. Cornelius Panna, Fr. Raphael Cherukareth, and Fr. Ajay Xaxa.

Don Bosco School, Sashipur has grown into a fully developed secondary school and continues to be a beacon of hope for quality education in the region. During the tenure of Fr. M.C. George Mudakkampuram, the school saw major infrastructural developments. A chapel, a nursery block, and an indoor stadium-cum-auditorium were constructed, and the overall facilities were significantly improved through renovations and modernization.

The school is progressing steadily and admirably under the able leadership of Rev. Fr. Nicodim Aind, Principal, and Rev. Fr. Paul Minj, Vice Principal. Their dedicated administration, farsighted vision, and tireless commitment have ensured the smooth functioning of the institution and the continued growth of all its activities.

In the recent past, the school has recorded significant achievements in academic excellence, co-curricular pursuits, and infrastructural development. Systematic planning, effective management, and the wholehearted cooperation of staff and students have contributed to the enhancement of teaching-learning standards, discipline, and overall performance.

Looking ahead, the leadership has outlined well-structured plans for the future, focusing on modernization of facilities, digital integration in classrooms, expansion of infrastructure, and the promotion of holistic education rooted in moral and spiritual values. These initiatives are aimed at equipping students to face the challenges of the times with competence, confidence, and character.

The school community—management, staff, students, and parents—continues to work in unity, inspired by the commitment of the Principal and Vice Principal. With such visionary leadership and collective dedication, the institution is confidently marching forward towards greater achievements in the years to come.
